David Steward, APCUG Region 8 Advisor

Hello Region 8 Groups,

I know that it has been a long time since we communicated, but I hope to be changing that in the future. Please make a note of my email addresses ( dsteward@texas.net and dsteward@apcug.net ) and use them whenever there is something that I can help you or your group with. That is our reason for being Regional Advisors in the APCUG. All of us love to hear from the groups within our respective regions, and love to share ideas with one another.

Attached to this message, you will see a part of the Nooz mailing that has a totally new look. This style may be adopted in the future, so please let me know what you think about it.

I want to keep you up to date on a couple of things. First, although a little behind the original schedule, the member database, now known as the User Group Locater Service (UGLS) has been placed into service. All of the information was entered fresh, so that we did not carry over erroneous data and information. So, if you are hearing about this issue of Nooz from someone else, and you did not receive it directly, it probably means that your group’s information is not up to date. Temporarily, all updates are being performed by our Membership Committee Chair, Marie Vesta. To update or change your group’s info, please send a message to Marie at mvesta@apcug.net, and she will get it taken care of. In the future, your groups APCUG Representative, President, or the person that has been assigned by your President, will be able to update it directly.

Second, as noted in the formal Nooz below, the APCUG is moving all of its hosting and electronic services to a new hosted environment. What does this mean to you? It means that your group can now offer email addresses to your members. If you do not presently have your website hosted on APCUG servers, you will need to obtain a DNS name, but they are cheap ( as low as $8.00 a year ). This can be a great marketing tool to increase your membership base.

Look for more improvements and changes in the near future.

For the record, I receive about 12 newsletters a month, and I read each and everyone one of them, from cover to cover. I would appreciate it if each of you would check to see if I am on your group’s mailing list to receive your newsletter each month. This is one way that I keep abreast of all of the happenings within the region.

Speaking of Newsletters, does your Editor need articles and material for your newsletter? If so, APCUG regularly sends out the “Push” articles to any member groups Editor that requests them. Contact Dave Gerber, dgerber@apcug.net, to be added to the list.

On a more personal note, I would like to add that I hope each of you is ready and have prepared for the upcoming hurricane season. Even though it is early, we have already had 2 named storms and this may be indicative of a very active season. Be sure to keep everything backed up, and have a plan prepared that can be put into motion at a moments notice. We can all remember how hard the Gulf Coast was hit by Katrina, Rita, and Ike, and I am sure that none of us want to go thru that again.

In closing, I want to say that I am proud to be representing the groups in Region 8. We are the best in the nation.

Ya’ll have fun, and be safe,
