Rogue security software
(or rogueware) is a form of computer malware that
deceives or misleads users into paying for the fake or simulated removal
of malware, or that installs other malware. Rogue security software, in
recent years (2008–2011), has become a growing and
serious security threat
in desktop computing.

A Fascinating Article About Passwords
How do you choose a good password? And what's meant by "good"
anyway? Is a long password better than a short one? What about a
long one that consists of many short words?
If you've ever wondered how hackers manage to crack
passwords, and why some are more difficult to crack than others,
there's a fascinating article at

Computer buyers duped into security
software purchases
People who purchase new
computers are being sold anti-virus software unnecessarily, according to a
new study.
The research conducted by
freebielist.com, a
website specializing in reviewing
free stuff on the
Internet, found that many electrical superstores fail to notify customers on
the numerous free alternatives.
The survey found that 1 in 3 elect to purchase anti-virus software at the
'point of sale'. Only 30% of respondents recognized free alternatives were
available. A further 15% of these believed free software was inferior.
Sales staff regularly recommend anti-virus packages, such as McAfee, Norton
or Kaspersky. However, a similar level of protection can be achieved without
spending hard-earned cash.
Andy Varley, founder of freebielist.com, explains;
It has become the norm for large computer retailers to recommend various
brands of security software. When people realise they can obtain anti-virus,
anti-spyware and even firewall software completely free of charge, they are
understandably frustrated.
Free software can be as good as, if not better, than commercial offerings.
But since many of the large electrical stores have negotiated deals with
software vendors, customers rarely hear the whole truth. This often results
in them purchasing commercial software when free alternatives would have
done a perfectly adequate job.
Varley added;
Regardless of whether you pay for security software, it is important to have
some form of protection. The problem appears to stem from inexperienced
computer users perceiving free as somehow lacking in quality. Of course,
more demanding roles may require a commercial solution, but for the home
user wanting to save cash, I highly recommend they download some freeware
instead."
