Recommendations

For home users or small office workers working with an existing desktop publishing application or other office product and spending much time creating the kinds of dynamic products referred to here, this collection of clipart and other image files is an excellent selection at a very competitive price. The many clipart catalogs now flooding the market all offer a similar means of accessing the files from the disks, namely a search engine of some sort or another search interface, and Corel's "Gallery" provides one of the more powerful search engine interfaces of all.

The decision to produce the accompanying full-color book that contains a thumbnail picture of all these many files is also a very welcome asset that many other vendors of competing image catalogs do not choose to do. This is a very nice extra feature that alone is near the value of the entire program.

Ultimately, a user has to decide which catalog to select, and I suspect the choice among the alternatives is heavily weighed by the number and different types of files included in the package. While this product certainly wins the battle of the number of files included, the many other features explained here also result in making this product an excellent value for your investment. With the massive amount of files included in this catalog, the suggested retail price of this program is a bargain.

Installation and Setup

This program is jam-packed with images, photos, animated objects, fonts, sound and video files that thankfully DO NOT install to your hard. These files are accessed through the installed search engine "Gallery" that allows you to search for these many files on the 16 included CD ROM discs. The Typical install loads approximately 43 MB of files that comprise the "Gallery," as well as the included Corel Photo House 2.1.

While there are 1,000 fonts available on the discs, by default, 53 fonts will load during install.

You also have an Advanced install option that allow for customization of files to load, including selecting more fonts to install.

Users of Corel Gallery 1,000,000 are advised to install this new version to the same location, and in doing so, this updates the existing "Gallery" browser, enabling the user to search for files in the 1,000,000 set along with the files on the 1,300,000 set.
