Digital Image Pro v. 7 puts you in control of your photos through a unique combination of powerful digital imaging tools with helpful wizards and professional-quality photo projects. Picture It! offers advanced tools that let you make your digital pictures look the way you want them to. Choose from over 3,000 professional photo projects or a wide variety of special effects to enhance your photos for sharing through prints, email, and the Web.

In today's world, we now depend more on digital cameras to capture our photos, and this has caused significant growth in computer software that helps digital camera owners with the transfer, storage, and especially enhancement of all their digital images. In addition, with USB now becoming the device connection option of choice, to be further enhanced with new USB 2.0 compatible ports, cables, and devices, this means we have an extremely fast means by which we can transfer these digital images from the camera to the computer. Once loaded onto a hard drive, then with an image editing software program, digital camera owners can begin to edit to their heart's delight their captured images. This explosion in digital imaging software has resulted in a great number of choices in this market, all with a great span of difference in price. At the time of this writing, these software applications have begun to fill the retail shelves, and fortunately for consumers, this has also resulted in the continuous improvement in these programs, along with a continuous drop in price.

Microsoft's Picture It! Digital Image Pro 7 represents one the more fully featured digital image editing programs that offers super value for its reasonable price point. While this program certainly does not compete on the same level as Adobe's premier Photoshop 7, it also costs ($109) a lot less than Photoshop ($600).

Recommendations

This latest version 7 of Microsoft Picture It! Digital Image Pro has most all bells and whistles any image editing novice could want in an image-editing program, including a less-cluttered interface, and now it also has more features that will appeal to higher-end photo hobbyists. In effect, Microsoft has added many features found in Adobe Photoshop Elements, Adobe's less expensive image editing program. This includes Digital Image Pro's fill flash, backlighting reduction, histograms, Photoshop plug-in filter support, dodge and burn capabilities, wrinkle removal, tinting, and 150 other Adobe Photoshop filters. A dozen other features have been renamed and are more like Adobe's. For instance, Picture Putty is now called Distort, Illusions is now called Filters, and Focus is now called Sharpen.

This means Digital Image Pro 7 competes more directly with Adobe's Photoshop Elements program, than with Adobe's high priced, very sophisticated Photoshop. However, Digital Image Pro 7.0 is no Adobe clone, as it is more consumer-like than Photoshop Elements 1.0, and seemed to me to be easier to use than Photoshop Elements.

Elements feels (and is) more sophisticated. For instance, the Picture It! retouching brush comes in seven sizes, while Photoshop Element's has 24. The gap between these two super consumer friendly image editing programs is now closer, especially because Microsoft has jettisoned its midrange product, PhotoDraw, and Adobe has given up on its starter program, PhotoDeluxe.

The Picture It! start-up screen offers five commonly performed tasks (Open, Import From Camera, Scan, Edit Multiple Pictures, and Create a Project), and shows thumbnails of photos you recently worked on. One of Picture It's best features, the Mini Lab for batch operations, does an even better job of correcting, rotating, and renaming pictures than it did before.

If you want a superior midrange product brimming with features, and do not mind a stiffer learning curve, look toward Photoshop Elements 2.0. For those who value ease of use, Picture It! Express has enough added enhancements to make an upgrade worth considering. If you want all the new features, go with Picture It! Digital Image Pro v. 7, the highest-end version available.
