EndNote 7 is the latest version of this superb reference application from ISI ResearchSoft, a
division of ISI (Institute of Scientific Information), a Thomson
Scientific Company. Thomson is a leading global e-information company with
annual revenue of approximately $6 billion.
Note: See the Reviews link in the home page of this site to take you to links to
reviews of Reference Manager and Pro Cite, excellent products also
available from ISI
ResearchSoft.
Long known for "Bibliographies Made Easy," EndNote 7 now can be known for
"Manuscripts and More Made Easy." Now, users can organize images
with text in an EndNote library, and create a figure list in Word. In
addition, EndNote 7 now comes equipped with a set of built-in Word templates
that simplify the tedious task of preparing manuscripts for submission.
These features, combined with an enhanced traveling library, a more
intuitive interface, and new content files, transform EndNote 7 into even
more of an essential research tool and manuscript manager than its past
super versions.
Well known for introducing innovative features to search online
bibliographic databases, organize references, and create instant
bibliographies, EndNote 7 delivers for authors new types of bibliographies,
flexible image handling, and connectivity to explore and mobilize reference
collections.
“We are pleased to provide our customers with new technologies that extend
the value of their EndNote libraries, including letting our users go mobile
on Palm handhelds,” said David Kochalko, President of ISI ResearchSoft. "Our
commitment to improving EndNote’s core features contributes to its premier
position among researchers worldwide.”
With EndNote 7, any type of generic image, such as BMP, TIFF, or JPEG file,
or application file, such as DOC, or XLS, can be managed along with your
text references using the new image and caption fields in any reference
type. Also, three new reference types, Chart, Equation, and Figure, are
ready to store the thumbnail image or file icon and link to the data source
for easy editing.
Until this latest version of EndNote 7, searching for images and other files
to cite in research papers was tedious. Now, EndNote 7 solves this problem.
Now you can find these more quickly, and you can even click on the thumbnail
to edit the image.
New Features Found in V. 7
Instant Subject Bibliographies
For the first time, users of EndNote 7 can save steps creating a
bibliography with topic headings using EndNote’s new Subject Bibliography.
For example, users simply select the field “Author” to view a bibliography
organized by author headings. The look of a user’s subject bibliography can
be controlled by selecting a favorite output style, choosing a sort order
and a numbering scheme for the references. This feature gives users an easy
way to update their curricula vitae and reading lists.
Flexible Placement of Images from EndNote References into Microsoft
Word
Users can take advantage of EndNote’s new ability to insert a figure or
table anywhere in a Microsoft Word document. Users can now search their
EndNote libraries for images to place figures and tables within the text, or
to create figure and table lists at the end of the document, depending upon
their presentation or publisher requirements. And there are new output style
settings to specify the caption location for figures or tables.
Compatibility with Popular Word Processors Using Rich Text Format
(RTF) Files
EndNote 7 now offers the ability to create bibliographies using StarOffice,
OpenOffice, AppleWorks, FrameMaker and more. EndNote 7 scans RTF documents
containing temporary EndNote citations and creates a bibliography instantly.
EndNote 7’s RTF document scan feature lets users choose any of over 1,000
output styles to create the final bibliography.
New Connectivity of EndNote References — Palm Handheld and
Visualization Software
EndNote 7 mobilizes a user’s EndNote library on Palm® OS. Users can now
access their references anywhere, anytime. With this new connectivity, users
can search, edit and beam references as well as use the HotSync® function
with their EndNote desktop libraries.
Other features include the ability to export
files in XML format, and to move EndNote references to data visualization
tools to help users explore research literature visually. In addition,
EndNote 7 helps users locate full text faster by connecting to an
institution’s online resources with OpenURL links. With over 1,500 content
files including output styles, templates, import filters and connection
files, EndNote 7 expands the ways to collect data from a wide variety of
online resources and to publish manuscripts.
The Cite While You Write feature provides an easy way for users to search
for and insert figures into their manuscripts EndNote 7 tracks inserted
figures the same way it does references, and automatically builds a figure
list for submissions. Users can change the figure placement in the
manuscript and then update the figure list in one click.
EndNote 7 has built in Word templates that will guide users through the
exacting manuscript requirements of publishers. Completed manuscripts are
now submission-ready with all the key elements in addition to EndNote's
instantly formatted in-text citations, bibliography, and figure list.
Whether you are a researcher, writer, librarian, information specialist,
student, or consumer, who wants to create citations and bibliographies
instantly and automatically, EndNote 7 provides a nice solution. This neat program helps you control
the organization and output of bibliographies, and is a super tool that
greatly aids with the creating and editing of scientific papers,
especially the citations and the bibliography of these cited sources.
Built into this fine program are over 1,000 different bibliographical styles that a user can use to format a bibliography, and all are pre-configured according to
the many highly specific different journal
requirements. In today's research and teaching environment that heavily
emphasizes continued publishing of scholarly research, professional
journals present an important means by which this publishing
responsibility can be accomplished.
Organizing bibliographies to suit these different scientific journal
requirements can become a nightmare, especially for writers who often
publish articles in various of these journals. The different formatting styles
already built into EndNote, a feature likely to be heavily used in
research situations, are alone worth the price of the software. This means a writer can
simply select the particular journal's preferred format from among these
styles, and the journal's requisite bibliographical arrangement is then organized to suit
this specific need. Printing the attached pre-configured bibliography
follows the standard Print function in Windows. Frequent updates to this already extensive list of styles are
also provided at
the EndNote Web site, www.endnote.com.
EndNote also contains numerous connection files that contain all the
information necessary for the program to open, search and import
references -from a remote database. In addition, many import filters are
included that EndNote uses to decipher information that has been
downloaded from an online or a CD ROM database. These files are also
frequently updated at the EndNote Web site.
Essentially, EndNote is three tools in one: an online search tool, a tool
for organizing references, and a tool that allows you to create bibliographies in one step.
EndNote's connection files can be used to seamlessly access remote
bibliographic databases (e.g. MEDLINE, PsycINFO, the Library of Congress,
or university catalogs). With simple mouse clicks, you can then transfer
your results directly into an EndNote database, with no additional
importing steps.
Organizing references is also very easy, and EndNote can be considered a
personal electronic card catalog to organize references. You can even
link references to full-text articles that may be available on the Internet.
Creating bibliographies is then very easy. From within either Word (for
Mac and Windows) and WordPerfect (Windows only), you can insert citations
to references used in the writing process, and format end-paper bibliographies. Incorporating last-minute changes and
automatically updating citations and bibliographies in the paper is as simple as
choosing the Format, Bibliography command from the Tools menu in either of
these two word processors. You then select from the over 700 bibliography
styles already built into the program to format the citations and
reference lists in manuscripts, term papers or other published
articles.

Key Concepts
Using EndNote's search interface provides a simple way to do basic
searches on EndNote libraries and remote databases. The same search
window is used for both purposes, and this removes the need to learn a
separate program to access online databases. Using EndNote's Import
command, you can also import references found within other search engine
interfaces.
You connect to a remote database, using the built in connection files.
Remember however, that some of these databases require prior payment of a fee, while other
databases may be open to public access. A complete listing of free access
databases can be found at the EndNote Web site.
When the connection has been
established, EndNote opens a Retrieved References window and displays the
Search window. EndNote is now ready to search the remote database.
The search request reveals the "hits" that are available in
the accessed database, and EndNote gives you the option to retrieve and
save these to an EndNote library. You can also refine the search, if the results are too
many, or if you need to further specify the references. You can read through the retrieved references, to see which ones you want
to keep, and then save the references by transferring them into an EndNote
library.
You can also use EndNote to download references from remote databases and
to import these downloaded references into an EndNote library. In
addition, you can manually create a new reference into an existing EndNote
library.
Once you have an EndNote library of references, you can begin to write
the paper in the selected word processor. In this writing phase, as you come across a need to
cite a reference, you use the features included in the additional Add-Ins
features, that EndNote also
installs to the machine, in order to place the necessary citation to a
reference in an EndNote library right in the document. You can select these
citations from within one or more EndNote libraries.
After completing the paper, adding and printing the bibliography is
very easy and also very customizable. In this phase of the writing of the
article, the user can then use one of
the many existing styles to help, so they can very easily and also very
quickly comply with the particular
requirements of the journal that will publish their article. This process
enables the requisite bibliography to be formatted according to protocol,
and in addition, the citations inside the text of the article are also
formatted as required by the journal.
Target Customers
Although one could consider loading and using this fine program on a home
PC, EndNote is really more suited for a library environment,
research institutes, laboratories, or other information publishing and
research functions. The focus is on professional writing that
would more likely be published in scholarly journals, research papers,
theses and dissertations, or grant research reports. Graduate students
will be very interested in the many features in this program that will
answer most all their citation and bibliography formatting and printing needs.
Comparable Applications
EndNote is one of many similar, highly specialized applications
that especially appeal to researchers and writers, including ISI
ResearchSoft's own Reference Manager and Pro Cite, SeeCite
Software's "Bibliographica," Sonny Software's "Bookends Plus," See Change
Corporation's "BookWhere? 2000," Oberon Development, Ltd's
"Citation," and
Research Software Design's "Papyrus."
EndNote
Recommendation
EndNote is absolutely essential for all university libraries,
and many of the larger public libraries serving larger markets. Wherever
there are an abundance of researchers, writers, students and teachers,
there should also be found this excellent resource. Although not overly
difficult to learn, use of EndNote will require some time to learn how to use
its many built-in features.

NOTE: This price includes one of the most thorough user manuals that I've
ever seen accompany any software in a very long time. The book is filled
with detailed instructions, screen shots, and step-by-step
instructions, and also contains an extensive index. In these days of
online support, or no help at all with many software applications, due to
the increased cost to write and publish these guides, this is an example
how good these now so very rare user manuals can be. Kudos to this company
for deciding to add this excellent resource to accompany this fine
program.

Installation and Setup
Installation and setup presented no complications or problems. You would
of course need to be sure you installed this on a system that met at least
the minimum specifications listed above. There are five major categories of
components that are installed with the program, including the program,
styles (formats for creating bibliographies), filters (files for importing
text files of reference data), connection files (to connect to online
reference databases), and word processor add-ins.
EndNote 7 is fully compatible with all libraries from earlier versions of EndNote
and EndNote Plus for DOS, Windows and Macintosh. EndNote 7 can
use styles created by EndNote versions 2-6, but EndNote 7 styles cannot be
used by versions prior to version 4. When opening an older EndNote style,
EndNote 7 opens it as a new untitled style which you may save with a new
name. The original style remains untouched, so that you may still use it
with older EndNote versions.
EndNote for Windows is compatible with Microsoft Word for Windows 97,
2000, XP, and
WordPerfect for Windows 2000 and 2002.
For those upgrading to EndNote 7, you should first back up any styles,
import filters or connection files you don't want overwritten. If you opt to
install the newer version in the folder with the older version, the setup process will remove the older version and any
existing Add-Ins. You do not need to uninstall any earlier version of EndNote in order to upgrade to the new version
6, but ISI recommends you
first uninstall any prior version before you install version 6.
The
uninstall process will remove only files, groups and icons that were installed the
last time EndNote was run, and will not delete libraries or any new files
you have created. It will also not delete any directories that contain EndNote
files you have created.
EndNote is also a network-compatible product, meaning that you can access an
EndNote library or an EndNote program installed on a network server. The
program can also be used in a mixed platform network environment, and this
has been tested
on Apple Share, Novell Netware, and Windows NT networks, and pc-specific
networks including Windows for Workgroups. The excellent user manual
includes an appendix that fully explains these network instructions and
requirements.
