Target Customers
After you have installed QuarkXPress 7, you will want to immediately go to
www.quark.com and download the latest 7.2
upgrade to the program. The update provides performance improvements and
addresses customer input. This important update also aligns support for
recent announcements, including Windows Vista and Quark XPert Tools Pro (the
most popular suite of QuarkXPress XTensions), and new language support with
user interfaces in five additional languages -- Czech, Greek, Polish,
Portuguese (Brazilian), and Turkish. The update also includes improvements in Job
Jackets, Flattening, and within XPress' Color Management Module.
User interface modifications in Job Jackets
enable users to create new rules directly from a layout evaluation dialogue
box, create and edit output specifications directly from the Output job
dialogue box, and create new layout specifications directly from the layout
menu.
Users can now specify resolutions for
different types of objects, specifically vector graphics, drop shadows, and
blends, while color management gets a boost in the form of support for
Kodak's new module which adds Black Point Compensation.
The above listed impressive features in QuarkXPress 7 should convey the
power of this high end program that is so commonly found in so many
businesses. With three million registered users worldwide, Quark is more
focused on keeping existing customers happy than on converting Adobe
InDesign users to QuarkXPress. While many people have switched to InDesign,
many more have stayed with QuarkXPress, just biding their time.
The new QuarkXPress 7 is what these InDesign customers have been waiting
for. QuarkXPress 7 fulfills two fundamental objectives: Its design-related
features are improved enough to keep QuarkXPress interesting and vital, and
it solves deep-seated workflow problems. This latest version 7 of
QuarkXPress more firmly turns the desktop, page-layout market on its head.
There are scores of significant new features in QuarkXPress 7. Some make
XPress more efficient to use, such as moving 95% of the controls once
available only in modal dialog boxes to the Measurements palette for instant
visual feedback. Other new features are more design features, such as
implementation of transparency and drop shadows that are markedly superior
to InDesign. Coupled with a dramatically improved on-screen display of text
and graphics, the designer's world takes a great leap forward.
The more profound changes involve collaboration and workflow. For the first
time in the page-layout world, the artificial barrier of "one user per
document" is gone, without the need for a server. Instead, anyone with a
copy of QuarkXPress can work on a document at the same time as other users,
and changes can appear in real time.
Another big change, which is actually required for the most successful
collaboration, is a technology that ensures that everyone working on a
project uses the same color management settings, output goals, and
mechanical specifications. With the new Quark Job Jackets technology, Quark
has tapped into the JDF (Job Description Format) standard and brought it
upstream to the original content creator. The designer doesn't need to know
anything about how Job Jackets work.
Quark has also lowered the price of XPress 7 by $200 to $749. Upgrades from
any version of XPress are $249. Quark has also lowered the price of
QuarkXPress Passport, the multi-language version of QuarkXPress, by $400 to
$1,499.
As with previous versions of XPress, version 7 lets you save your project
down one level, to version 6. Of course, if you used any features new to
version 7, they'll be ignored when saved down to version 6. The new version
7 is such a tremendous upgrade, it's unlikely that anyone would create a new
project without using the new features. On the other hand, it's handy for
editing projects that were created in version 6 without having to launch the
older application.
The XPress box contains a 420-page printed guide that explains how to use
all the new features, along with a 41-page quick-start guide that briefly
explains what each feature is, where it is, and how to use it. The box also
includes two training videos (one 40 minutes, one 80 minutes) on CD that
show you how to use each new feature. Including these training materials is
a welcome return-to-form for Quark, who had been roundly criticized for not
providing printed manuals with past releases. To make the manuals even
handier to use, the installer also places PDF versions of them inside the
XPress folder. This inclusion of a paper manual also indicates the
tremendous power and complexity of QuarkXPress, as the company recognizes
that the page layout market still continues customers who are new to
QuarkXPress. The program is so deep with tools and features, that it cries
out for some sort of paper guide to operation, especially for those
customers who may still not be thoroughly familiar with the program. In
addition to these resources, Quark also has brief training videos on its Web
site and free technical support by phone, in English.
Quark has caught up with InDesign in many areas (OpenType, colored layers),
and surpassed it in others (Photoshop support, transparency, drop shadows).
However, QuarkXPress 7 still lacks many of InDesign niceties (multi-line
composer, print preview, a color sampler tool).
On the workflow front, Quark beats InDesign hands down. If your company
relies on pumping out pages, you'll make more money because of the new
automatic color management, collaboration, Job Jackets, and output
capabilities. QuarkXPress 7's interface is now even more efficient to use,
a benefit that cannot be overestimated.
This upgrade is about Quark keeping its existing users happy enough to
upgrade to a new version of QuarkXPress. Its new design features let
QuarkXPress 7 users create pages that are difficult or impossible to produce
in InDesign. XPress 7's new collaboration features have the potential to
revolutionize the way workgroups lay out documents, while simultaneously
reducing production time and errors. Its new output features, including Job
Jackets, make it far, far easier to successfully output jobs the first time.
Recommendation
I highly recommend QuarkXPress 7 for anyone involved in desktop
publishing, or page layout, such as magazine layout or newspaper layout. The
dominance of QuarkXPress in these specialized markets indicates its
preferred status, but customers who may not yet have experienced the power
of QuarkXPress will definitely be amazed at what the program will do for
them. Customers brand new to QuarkXPress 7 also may want to budget for
additional training, in order to maximize the power of the program as
quickly as possible. QuarkXPress also is the page layout program that would
be a better choice for educational institutions that have developed classes
around this technology. While students may not necessarily find QuarkXPress
in all companies, when they learn the tools and features of QuarkXPress,
they will also be much more likely to more quickly adapt to other
established software, such as Adobe's InDesign, or other desktop publishing
programs.
Those who may be complete novices to desktop publishing are encouraged to
begin learning about page layout programs by starting with lower priced,
home-based desktop publishing programs, such as Microsoft's Publisher, or
any of the other many inexpensive page layout programs that are commonly
found on the retail shelves.

About Quark, Inc.
Quark was founded in Denver, Colorado in 1981. Named after the
subatomic particle proposed as the building block for all matter, the goal
was to create software that would be the platform for publishing.
QuarkXPress made an immediate impact when it was released in 1987. Desktop
publishing was in its infancy, and most publications were produced
mechanically. QuarkXPress introduced precision typography, layout, and color
control to the desktop computer, and delivered those features to designers
at a fraction of the cost of proprietary typesetting systems. There are now
more than three million QuarkXPress users worldwide.
In 1988, Quark began international operations with the establishment of
offices across Europe and the Far East. Quark maintains service, support,
and development offices in France, Germany, India, Japan, Switzerland, the
United Kingdom, and the United States. Customers in more than 100 countries
worldwide rely on Quark products to create, design, and manage their
documents - from newspapers, magazines, and books to catalogs, brochures,
packaging, and online material.
Today, Quark maintains its industry leadership with a product line that ties
together traditional print publishing with enterprise content management,
personalization, and tools for creating collaborative, cross-media
workflows.
With QuarkXPress, Quark, Inc. has helped spark the revolution in desktop
publishing. With the Quark suite of enterprise publishing software — Quark
Publishing System, Quark Content Manager, and Quark Dynamic Document Server
— Quark is paving the way for custom publishing in a multiple-channel
environment. The company's industry-leading design, publishing,
personalization, and content management software let publishers efficiently
create content once and deliver it anywhere, now.
Quark is headquartered in Denver, Colorado. The company is privately held.
