What’s New With Earthmate?
The Earthmate GPS receiver is a high-performance GPS antenna that can be
used for in-vehicle tracking and asset location. Add the Bluetooth-enabled
Earthmate Powerpak for a completely wireless solution. The Earthmate GPS
receiver also can be set up to seamlessly work with the data in Street
Atlas USA 2004 Plus.
Now get the improved accuracy of WAAS-enabled GPS positioning using the
versatile new Earthmate GPS receiver. The new Earthmate can be used for
in-vehicle tracking purposes and also as a stationary sub-meter
positioning device with DeLorme GPS PostPro 2.0 post-processing software.
Now there is an affordable way to attain sub-meter accuracy for a variety
of land-based applications.
At the heart of the new Earthmate is the SiRFstar IIe low-power chipset,
with cold-start times of only 45 seconds, with many customers reporting
start-up times of less than 5 seconds! This chip set requires 75% less
power to operate than comparable technologies.
The Earthmate GPS receiver includes a built-in LED that transitions
through the various satellite acquisition modes: red for searching, yellow
for two satellites in view, and green for at least three satellites in
view. Earthmate is a 12-channel NMEA-compliant GPS.
The new NMEA-compliant Earthmate can be powered directly from a USB laptop
so no batteries are needed. (A separate serial cable and other accessories
are available.)
Earthmate lets you take advantage of the Global Positioning System (GPS)
to locate your position reliably on the globe, provide constant visual
feedback regarding your position while using a supported desktop
application, trace your travel, monitor your speed/direction/travel, and
much more.
Earthmate GPS is compliant with Windows 98 (does not support USB-to-serial
drivers), 98 SE, ME, 2000, and XP operating systems. Optional serial
12-volt power adapter cable available separately from DeLorme for Windows
CE and Palm OS users.
IMPORTANT: DeLorme does NOT support the Earthmate GPS
receiver when it is used with third-party mapping applications.
More Accurate - 2-5 meter accuracy; sub-meter accuracy possible for
stationary land-use with DeLorme post-processing software

Low-power SiRF Chipset - works faster and requires less power
USB connection - No batteries needed for use with laptops and tablet PCs

in-vehicle mounting
Installing and Setting Up Earthmate GPS
First you need to verify that the DeLorme mapping applications you will
use with your Earthmate GPS receiver have been installed, e.g., Street
Atlas USA 2004 Plus. Then, you plug the Earthmate GPS receiver into an
available USB port. Or, if you are using the Earthmate GPS receiver with a
serial cable, plug the Earthmate into an available serial port.
Windows 98 users may need to insert their OS disc into their CD ROM drive
to install system Human Interface Devices.
Next, you insert the Earthmate GPS Setup CD ROM disc into your CD ROM
drive. The program's setup should begin automatically and the
InstallShield Wizard welcome screen displays.
Then, you click Next to see the Driver Option screen. If you are using the
GPS receiver with a serial cable and/or will only be using the Earthmate
with DeLorme mapping applications, you select the option, "I will be using
Earthmate with Delorme mapping programs" and click Next. If you will be
using the GPS receiver with both DeLorme and third-party applications that
are NMEA 0183-compatible, then you select the option, "I will be using
Earthmate with DeLorme and/or non-DeLorme mapping programs and need to
install USB-to-serial drivers." You continue with the Install Drivers
option to complete the setup process.
Reminder: DeLorme does not support the Earthmate GPS receiver when
it is used with third-party mapping applications.
Then, you register the device online, and this finishes the Earthmate GPS

Customer Data Analysis
You have a local pizza delivery service. You display your frequent
customer sales database through the XData feature of Street Atlas USA 2004
Plus and notice that many customers are along a couple of specific
neighborhood streets. You click on the region and display demographic data
about that area, confirming that other customers are likely to come from
this area. You click on a street on the map, choose “Phone Listings” from
the menu, and generate a list of the names, addresses and phone numbers of
prospects for your door-to-door delivery staff. They add handwritten notes
on flyers and coupons to distribute to the residents and this personal
touch increases your orders.
You look at your data a little further and realize that you’d like to send
a letter to everyone in a certain telephone area code and exchange. You
enter the area code and exchange and get the complete listing. You map
these listings visually and that helps you to establish the geographic
limits of your delivery service.
Verifying Phone Calls
You have received telephone calls after hours from individuals and
businesses. The incoming phone numbers are recorded on your Caller ID
unit, but the callers do not leave enough information on your answering
machine for you to recognize who they are. Enter this phone number into
DeLorme phone search to find the name of the person or business calling
you so that you can check your customer list and follow up with them. If
there are multiple listings at this phone number, all will be shown. Click
a button and see their location on the map.
Finding a Business Service
You are a traveling sales rep and starting to work a new sales region. You
need more sales brochures in a hurry. You have Street Atlas USA 2004 Plus
on your laptop. You enter the town name and the keyword “copying” into
Phone Search. It lists twenty businesses to choose from. You push the Map
button to see them all displayed geographically. Your GPS location is on
the map, too, and it is easy to find the nearest one. You call the phone
number listed for the copy shop to make sure that they are open before you
drive there. If you have trouble finding them, the Route tab with VoiceNav
tells you the driving directions as you go.
Filling Information Gaps
You have trouble interpreting the message left on your answering machine
by a customer. You have the last name and the area code of the caller’s
phone number. You enter the last name and the area code and get a listing
of the possibilities for a follow-up call, eliminating those which are
flagged as being registered on the DMA Do Not Call list.
Finding Associations
You want to choose a good location for a new clothing store. You enter the
name of a locally eminent lawyer into Phone Search and find his business
listing. Clicking the result you choose the “Search this Phone” menu item.
All of the other attorneys at that firm are listed. Then you choose the
“Search this Address” menu item. All of the businesses at this busy office
complex are listed. You now have a list of people to survey to help
determine whether this is a good business location.
Recommendations
Street Atlas USA 2004 Plus is one of the most feature-rich mapping
applications now available, and it easily surpasses most all other
competing programs. You will find a complex array of amazing features in
this important program that belongs in the toolkits of all the above
mentioned types of possible customers. In addition, all public libraries
should seriously consider adding this program to their collection of
resources. You will be impressed with all the things you can do with this
program, that is very reasonably priced and offers such high value.

About DeLorme
DeLorme is a leading provider of
mapping products and technical solutions for the consumer and professional
markets. Located in Yarmouth, Maine, DeLorme headquarters is home to
corporate offices, a state-of-the-art research and development facility,
the DeLorme Map Store, and Eartha, the world’s largest rotating globe.
Since its incorporation in 1976, DeLorme has developed an unprecedented
reputation as a leader in the mapping industry. From humble beginnings as
a paper atlas publisher, the company quickly emerged as a pioneering
technological innovator. DeLorme not only embraced emerging technologies,
it developed them.
After over a quarter century, DeLorme’s paper Atlas and Gazetteer series
is still without peer. Covering all 50 states, they provide a unique
topographic perspective and a level of detail unmatched in similar
publications.
DeLorme’s research into alternative media and advanced technologies in the
1980’s helped define digital mapping as we know it today. Street Atlas USA
was the first software product to put street-level detail for the entire
country on a single CD. Over a dozen versions later, Street Atlas USA is
undisputedly regarded as the consumer mapping software title against which
all others are judged.
Street Atlas USA was the solid foundation upon which increasingly advanced
software titles were built. Topo USA, 3-D TopoQuads, and ultimately the
XMap suite of products were all released to high acclaim.
DeLorme’s attention has increasingly turned toward the professional
market. Building on its reputation for providing easy-to-use, affordable
mapping solutions, it quickly found a loyal following with professionals
who recognized the value in a quality product.
XMap provides a versatile and powerful mapping tool with which to use
DeLorme’s map data offerings such as high-resolution USGS quads, 10-meter
color satellite imagery, and up-to-date street-level vector data. The
modular structure of XMap offers a level of flexibility not found in more
expensive alternatives. This allows for quick and easy adaptation when the
need dictates.
In 2003, DeLorme announced a new state-of-the-art digital aerial imagery
platform called TopoBird. The TopoBird aerial imagery data collection
platform delivers high-quality color imagery for considerably less money
than film-based systems. Because the data is captured digitally,
time-consuming film processing is no longer needed, which means delivery
times are much faster.
DeLorme has also been a leading provider of GPS solutions at a very
affordable price. In tandem with the developing GPS infrastructure,
DeLorme first released Tripmate and later Earthmate as a perfect companion
for its software. For the ultimate in mobility, XMap Handheld Street Atlas
USA Edition is a powerful tool for any Palm OS or Pocket PC user.
